Romantic Times Conventions

The Romantic Times Booklovers Convention—eight hundred booklovers gather for a week of parties, writing and life workshops, award luncheons, and the largest book fair you’ll ever see!  Authors of romance, suspense, mystery and fantasy fiction come together with other merchants for four days of fun.  The parties include a masquerade ball, a vampire ball, pajama party and other themed parties.  And for those who enjoy looking at a pretty face, the cover model pageant brings in guys from all over to compete for the title of Mr. Romance.  The winner gets to pose for an actual book cover.  For more information on the conventions, pageant, or RT Bookclub Magazine, go to http://www.romantictimes.com/.

Yes, we actually went to a cathouse in Reno, where prostitution is legal. You should see the menus!

Mom and I got this great caricature at the Rock and Roll party!

Stasia was my guest signer! Since she's in my book, Now You See Me, she "pawtographed" with me at the bookfair. The Discovery Channel filmed us for a special on the convention!

During the party, we corralled the cover models and asked them provocative questions. Note the expressions on their faces!

This is our bud, Dave Deslandes.(visit Dave's website)  Dave’s in his Medieval Times garb (he works at the MT in Canada) and was on his way to an event.  When we saw him in his cool getup, we had to grab a photo op!  Dave came in second runner up in the pageant this year.

Mom, me, Stasia, and Denise Simonds.  Stasia is a seizure alert dog, and she’s in my 2002 suspense novel, Now You See Me as a Seeing Eye dog.  Stasia is an Australian Shepherd.

Author Kayla Perrin (far right) and I hosted the Wild and Wacky Reader’s Party.  Here we’re playing Romance Jeopardy with some, er, let’s say untraditional categories!  Author Cheryl Anne Porter is on the left, and between me and Kayla is pageant contestant Dave Martinez.

That’s me with my Reviewer’s Choice Award for The Wrong Mr. Right.  Oh, you want to know who the guy is!  That’s John DeSalvo.  Go to the romance section of any bookstore and you’ll see his face on many of the covers.  He won the Mr. Romance title in a past pageant and he’s gone onto cover superstardom.  And so when the photographer asked him to pose with me, who was I to say no?

Mom, pageant contestant Stephen Fulton, and me.

This is what the pose down portion of the pageant looks like.  Each contestant poses down in costume with one of the costume competition contestants.  This is Dave Deslandes with Judy Speakman

These are the contestants in their costumes waiting for the winner to be announced.  Seated is Karin David, costume contestant, and to her right are pageant hosts Steve Sandalis and David Alan Johnson.

As if the convention weren’t enough, we added a day at Disney!  From left, Mom, Shayne Pozzessere, Dave Deslandes, me, and Lance Taubold.
